Contur

FAQ

Is Contur a VPN service?

No. Contur is a client application for macOS, like FortiClient: it connects your Mac to your organisation's FortiGate gateways and to your own WireGuard servers. We provide no servers and no internet access — only a license for the program is sold.

How is Contur different from FortiClient?

FortiClient connects to one gateway at a time, and the gateway administrator dictates your routes and DNS. Contur keeps multiple gateways up at once, sends only the addresses and domains you choose into the tunnels, reconnects automatically after sleep or a network change, and lives in the menu bar.

Which gateways and sign-in methods are supported?

FortiGate SSL-VPN with username and password sign-in; the gateway certificate is verified. One-time codes (OTP) and SAML sign-in are not supported yet, so check this during the trial.

Does my traffic go through your servers?

No. Tunnels run directly between your Mac and your FortiGate gateways and WireGuard servers. Our server only sees the weekly license check and update checks.

Do I need to register for the trial period?

No. The trial starts on first launch and is tied to the computer, not to an account.

What happens when the trial period or the subscription ends?

Connections stop, and routes and DNS are restored to how they were. Your profiles stay: you can view and export them. After payment, connections come back automatically.

How do I move a license to a new Mac?

Install Contur on the new Mac, click “Sign in” under “Settings → License”, then move the license to the new device in your account.

What data do you store?

Your account email, your Mac's model and macOS version, a hash of its hardware identifier (the identifier itself is never sent), and your payment history. Connection profiles, passwords and addresses never reach the server. See the Privacy Policy for details.

Can I get a refund?

The trial is there to try things out, so once a paid license is in use we don't refund it because it “didn't suit”. Other cases are covered by section 6 of the Terms: contact support with your order number.

Will there be a version for Windows and Linux?

Yes, it's planned. The license is tied to the device, not to the operating system.
